Cubs Add Felix Doubront; Close to Trading Bonifacio

The Cubs, led by Theo Epstein, have acquired another player that he knows from his time with the Red Sox.

Felix Doubront is a left-handed pitcher who has had some success in the Red Sox rotation the past couple of years, but is struggling to find consistency in 2014.  At 26, though, he is not beyond repair, and in the same mold of Jake Arrieta last year, this is a player who may just need the ever so popular “change of scenery.”  In exchange of Doubront, the Cubs will send a player to be named later to the Red Sox.

Alex Speier, WEEI.com’s Red Sox beat writer says that we’ll have to wait to find out who the Cubs are sending to the Red Sox until after the rule five draft, meaning we probably shouldn’t get too attached to anyone the Cubs may select in December.  It could also mean that the player going to the Red Sox will be rule five eligible and someone the Red Sox will not want to protect themselves before the draft happens.

It also appears that the Cubs will be moving Emilio Bonifacio soon, although the answer as to where and what would come back to the Cubs is still very much in the air.  A number of teams appear to be in the discussion to acquire Bonifacio.

And, for those who haven’t yet heard, the Darwin Barney trade was completed today, with the Cubs acquiring RHP Jonathan Martinez from the Dodgers.  He was with their Midwest League affiliate, the Great Lakes Loons, where he’s pitched to a 3.47 ERA in 106.1 innings.  He will likely make the trip to Appleton, WI and meet up with the Cubs’ Midwest League affiliate, Kane County.
